The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore has finalised the alignment and station locations for the first phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL). To be constructed in three phases, the underground CRL will connect the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi. It is estimated that the line will be used by 600,000 passengers in the initial years and may increase to more than one million.
The 29km-long first phase (CRL1) of the line will feature 12 stations stretching between Aviation Park and Bright Hill. This phase will serve the areas of Loyang, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Defu, Hougang, Serangoon North and Ang Mo Kio.
Once developed, it will significantly reduce journey times for commuters travelling between the central, north-eastern and eastern parts of Singapore. Additionally, it will offer connectivity to the other Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines. CRL1 will connect to the East-West Line at Pasir Ris Station, North-East Line at Hougang Station and North-South Line at Ang Mo Kio Station. CRL1 will also offer connectivity to the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line at Bright Hill Station.
Construction works for the first phase of the CRL will begin next year and are due to be completed by 2029.
LTA is also planning to develop a 57ha CRL depot at Changi East, which will be equipped to offer maintenance services for up to 80 CRL trains. To facilitate the construction of CRL1, the Singapore government will partially acquire eight properties along the route.
The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has already gazetted the acquisition and will work with the affected landowners to complete the process. Engineering studies are underway for the remaining two phases of the CRL.
